Some excellent retail space has opened up on the corner of Washington and Jackson Streets, 'on the square' in Carbondale. And while the 'squareness' of the Town Square may be open to debate, the commercial viability of the neighborhood remains strong, despite the fact that the 'Neighborhood' Coop has left the neighborhood. And while a world-class graphics/marketing firm, the Arthur Agency, will be moving into the old Coop location, the corner storefront has been vacated by New Chillan's coffee house, whose owner has found greener pastures at the old Mungo Jerry's coffee house in Murphysboro.

Two weeks before Bike 2 Work Day

Today, the Bike 2 Work Day committee met with the bicycle dealers, and with Mayor Brad Cole and Elaine Ramseyer of the Historic Town Square Coalition . . . to solidify plans for this year's event on May 12, at noon, when there will be a get together of 'cyclists at the Town Square Pavilion.

Details are in the Bike 2 the Future blog. The essentials are: Friday, May 12 -- ride a bicycle to work, then lunch at 12 noon at the pavilion. Enjoy the ride!

Food will be provided by the six restaurants on the square, courtesy of Mayor Cole and Square Deal Events. Items from the menus of the Newell House, Tres Hombres, Global Gourmet, Longbranch, Big Boys, and Thai Taste will be served -- while it lasts.

Trophies will again be made by another Town Square business: Carbondale Trophy.

And for the 4th year, Darby McGrann will add a mellow vibe with his guitar music.

Wall to Wall

Last week, I pushed myself away from the computer to get outside and walk the pavements of the old town square area, asking different people if they have considered painting a mural on the walls of their buildings.
The idea of painting attractive murals on the walls of prominent buildings in the city of Carbondale, Illinois has been proposed by On The Square Online. For instance, the wall in the forefront used to say Siebert's Drugs, with a large Coca Cola logo . . . all faded now.

The word on the street is that the corner space (most recently occupied by a coffee house) will become the office of a high-end marketing and web design company.

Maybe they can do some high-end wall painting on their new HQ.

Only one more day for the Carbondale Main Street Ebay Auction, ending April 24.

Corner Store for Rent?

Maybe you heard this already, but Rob at New Chillan's has moved to greener pastures in Murphysboro in the old Mungo Jerry's location . . . which leaves Dylan M. the Greyhound guy on the spot for a place to locate his office, since he shared the building with Rob.

It would be a good location for a Coop-type grocery store, wouldn't it? Maybe Arnold's Market would consider expanding.
