First the good news, then the correct answer
At a drawing held at
Art Lovers Trading Company this morning, the winning entry to the "When was ABC Liquor Mart established at its current location?" question was selected.
And the winner is -- __
Everyone in the drawing answered
1955, "according to the commercial" --except for one answer (based on the recollection of someone who was there at the time)
-- 1959! -- which turns out to be the actual date. So not only was this contest fun, but also
instructive.
There will be another chance for everyone in On The Square's next audience participation contest in February. Can't tell you what it is, yet, but it has something to do with the location of Carbondale's first "Natural Foods" co-op on Jackson St.

Promoting Carbondale Town Square
Carbondale's Town Square district is unique to Southern Illinois for two reasons: 1) it isn't truly a "Square" like those in some other cities in the region, and 2) it has more "world-class" restaurants and cool gift shops than any area of comparable size in Southern Illinois.
Be There. On The Square.Town Square in Carbondale has more fine dining & unique gift shops in view of the Pavilion than any town in Southern Illinois. . . .with Tastes of Thai, and Tex-Mex fun at TresThe Branch for vegetarianAnd Global Gourmet entrees. And Newell House epicurean. If you love unique & diverse giftsThere's a place to fill that need.Nearby a place to buy good feed. From the Pavilion you can see,Two Doves Photography,And Guitars and such at OVC,and Video & Music at Sound CoreAnd Kaleidoscope has gifts galore.Like Yesteryear Tobacconist, next door

ABC Liquor Mart, est. *what year* ?
The Bank of Carbondale is "Your Hometown friend"
It's all on the Town Square. Be There.
The music is "
Seezin' the Moment," from
Volume 1 of Guitars Between the Rivers.) which works really well.
Unfortunately, not all the businesses in the Town Square district, are represented in the current Town Square television commercial; notably:
Arthur Agency, Don Camilla Mexican Grocery, Big Boys Q, the Design Consultants, Fredericks Hair Styling, Carbondale Trophy Company, the geographical research firm, Big Muddy Independent Media Center,
WDBX, Cadillac Lounge, the Quick Stop place, Tropicana, King Beef, Barrett, Morris, Broom attorneys, Mary Lou's, the Sachi Japanese restaurant, the Tattoo shop. More than a television commercial could easily cover in sixty seconds.
Convenient market shows "Inconvenient Truth"
On Saturday,
December 16, at 6:00pm, Town Square Market on Jackson St. will be hosting a free viewing of “An Inconvenient Truth”, Al Gore’s documentary about global warming. MoveOn.Org has organized more than 1,575 parties across the country to show this inspiring film to thousands of people.
This could be the tipping point moment for the climate crisis. But we need to send a message to Washington that they can't ignore: It's time to tackle global warming. We will be writing postcards to send to Mr. Gore and he will be taking them to Congress in January to show the concern of the American public. There will also be a conference call with him after the viewing.
